Vircue for macOS
Getting started
- Launch Vircue — it lives in your menu bar (the V mark), not the Dock.
- On first run, grant Accessibility and Screen Recording when prompted. Re-open anytime: menu-bar icon → Settings… → Permissions → Re-run Setup.
- Arrange your windows, type a name, and click Save to capture a layout.
- Click a layout (or press its shortcut) to switch to it.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
⌃⌥1–⌃⌥9 | Switch to layout 1–9 |
⌃⌥A | Auto-arrange windows on the focused screen |
⌃⌥P | Picture-in-Picture the frontmost window |
⌃⌥V | Video PiP — pop the browser's native player |
⌃⌥M | Minimize every window on the current Space |
Free vs Pro
- Free — up to 3 saved layouts, manual switching, and minimize-Space.
- Pro — unlimited layouts, multi-Space layouts, Auto-Arrange, scheduling (layouts, apps, and websites), Picture-in-Picture (up to two), and global hotkeys.
- Trial — every install starts with a 14-day full-Pro trial. After it ends, Vircue keeps working on the Free plan; your existing layouts are never deleted.
Enter a license key in Settings → License to unlock Pro.
Troubleshooting
Windows don't move when I switch layouts. Accessibility permission is missing or was reset. Open Settings → Permissions and make sure Accessibility shows Granted; if not, click Grant.
Picture-in-Picture shows nothing / a black panel. Screen Recording permission is missing. Settings → Permissions → Screen Recording → Grant. macOS sometimes requires quitting and reopening Vircue after granting this one.
My Picture-in-Picture freezes when I switch Spaces. macOS stops drawing a window once it's on another Desktop, so there are no new pixels to mirror. Vircue asks once per app how to fix it: Reopen Unthrottled (Chrome/Electron apps only — reopens the app with background rendering on, and the window stays where it is) or Use PIP Stage (moves the window onto a hidden display Vircue creates, so macOS never stops drawing it). While an app is staged the PIP shows a LIVE · STAGED badge — click it to send the window back. Closing the PIP always returns the window to whichever Desktop you're on. Change your mind later in Settings → Picture-in-Picture → Forget.
A window restored to the wrong spot after I changed monitors. Vircue remaps saved positions onto your current displays and keeps windows on-screen. If a layout was saved on a very different monitor setup, just re-save it on your current setup to refresh the positions.
An app opened on the wrong Space / didn't come to my Space. macOS doesn't allow apps to pull another app's single window across Spaces. When that happens Vircue shows an "On another Space" note you can click to jump to it.
A layout won't go below a certain window size (e.g. Reminders, Notes). Those apps enforce a minimum width while their sidebar is showing; Vircue collapses the sidebar during restore, but some apps still clamp. This is an app limitation, not a bug in Vircue.
